Part Three – Beware Shifting Goal Posts
‘I’ll be happy when I lose weight’; ‘I’ll be happy when I get a pay rise’; ‘I’ll be happy when…’ There is always something new to aim for (itself one of the beautiful things about life), but constant deferment of happiness in favour of newly emerging goals will make you exhausted and frustrated.
Celebrate your wins! Take time to recognise when you have achieved something on your list and make a conscious decision to break and reward yourself instead of shifting your sites immediately onto a new goal.
More and more evidence is emerging to suggest that contrary to popular assumption – happiness doesn’t grow from success; rather success grows from happiness. Shawn Achor explains in this TED Talk that a happy mindset paves the way for greater productivity and success.
So take a short break from endless task-lists, five-year plans and personal bench-marking in order to appreciate and enjoy how far you have come.
