As we prepare to leave winter (hooray) and enter spring, it is an ideal time to cleanse any of the toxins (or ama in ayurvedic terms) that may have built up in the body over wintertime.
There are many types of ayurvedic cleanses, however almost all of them call for the reduction of your diet for a set period of time (some as little as three days, others up to a month) to light, warm vegetable soups cooked with detoxifying herbs and spices.
I am currently on day three of a five day cleanse and am living on herbal teas and a surprisingly delicious Mung Bean soup.
I am also drinking lots of this beautiful and easy-to-make detox tea, variations of which can be found all over the Internet.
In the morning I boil 1 litre of water with 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds; 1 teaspoon of Fennel Seeds; 3/4 teaspoon of cumin seeds; 2 slices of fresh ginger and a cinnamon stick for five minutes and let the mixture steep for a further five minutes. Then I simply decant into a thermos flask and drink throughout the day.
