5 Ways to get your metabolism firing!

While we would all love a naturally fast metabolism that allows us to indulge in the food we may crave, it is not something we were all blessed with at birth.  Worse still, many of us find that as we *whisper* get older, our metabolism slows and it becomes more difficult to shift any extra pounds we have put on.

The good news is there are plenty of natural ways you can give your metabolism a boost, and the best time to do this is first thing in the morning.

  1. Drink warm water with lemon.  The first thing you should ingest when you get up in the morning is a glass of boiled water, into which you have squeezed a fresh, organic lemon.  Allow it to cool before you drink it and let it cleanse and fire up your digestive system.
  2. Start with Eggstra protein!  Protein is wonderful for giving your metabolism a lift and eggs are a formidable source of this.  Why not work on expanding your egg recipe repertoire so you can vary your breakfast without compromising your protein?
  3. Keep it green!  Caffeine in general actually helps to fire your metabolism and green tea, often touted as something of a panacea in itself, is a healthy source of caffeine that is great to imbibe throughout the day.
  4. Hydrate! It’s not news that we should all probably drink more water, however it’s worth noting that upping your H2O intake is also a great way to keep your metabolism ticking over nicely.
  5. Don’t starve!  Again, not the most revolutionary of health tips but if you are trying to speed up your metabolism as part of a weight-loss program, the temptation could be to drastically reduce your calorie intake.  Calorie and portion control are part of weight-loss, however going hungry could actually work against you as your body goes into survival mode; clinging to life-saving fats.  Instead, choose to eat small, healthy meals regularly throughout the day.  This will have the added benefit of keeping a lid on hunger and cravings and will make you more likely to stick to your goals.
